Choosing the right type of cheese can satisfy your appetite and avoid health problems.

The unsafe cheeses are usually made from raw and unpasteurized milk, which tends to have higher levels of Listeria bacteria. If you don't know what milk the cheese was made from, it is best not to consume it. Here are some of the different types of cheese that you should be eating when pregnant.

Safe cheese during pregnancy:

All types of hard cheeses, along with a few other cheeses, are considered safe to use during pregnancy. You can satisfy your craving for cheese while pregnant.

  • Hard cheese: These ripen for a long time and have a firm texture. They're usually made from pasteurized milk or cooked at extremely high temperatures, which eliminates the risk of bacteria being present. Cheddar, parmesan, paneer, and provolone are some variations that you can achieve.
  • Processed soft cheeses: Such cheeses have a soft and flexible texture, but can also be watery or liquid. Soft cheese made from pasteurized milk can be eaten by pregnant women. Cheese spreads, cottage cheese, cream cheese, mozzarella and ricotta fall into this category.
  • Processed cheese: Made from modified natural cheese, these can contain stabilizers, emulsifiers and other additives. Because these cheeses are made using a heating method, they are safe for pregnant women. However, they are lower on the healthy diet scale than natural cheese due to the higher sodium content.
