Ichigo Kurosaki (黒 崎 一 護, Kurosaki Ichigo) is a person who is both a fullbringer and a mixed quincy who gained shinigami powers through encountering Rukia Kuchiki and has since become a substitute shinigami. His parents are Isshin Kurosaki (born Isshin Shiba) and Masaki Kurosaki, Ichigo also had two younger dizygoti twin sisters, Karin Kurosaki and Yuzu Kurosaki. Orihime Inoue is his wife and together they have a son named Kazui Kurosaki. Ichigo was temporarily a member of Kūgo GinjōsXcution, where he was registered as member number 007.

The most prominent feature of Ichigo is his spiky orange hair. He is a rather tall, slender young man with peach skin and brown eyes. He likes to wear tight-fitting clothes. He tends to wear shirts with the number 15 because his name is a homonym for the number. Since he became a Shinigami, he has become noticeably more muscular, as his sister Karin noted. When in his spiritual form, Ichigo wears the standard Shinigami clothing, with an additional strap across the chest. Initially it was a thick brown belt that held his zanpakutō sheath, but later it became a red rosary after awakening his own shinigami powers. It is shaped like a kite with a flat top and bottom. Several people, including Jūshirō Ukitake, have noted that Ichigo's appearance bears a resemblance to Kaien Shiba, the former lieutenant of the 13th Division. After training in the Dangai, Ichigo's hair became considerably longer and he became noticeably larger. After Ichigo loses his shinigami powers, his appearance returns to what it was before his dangai training.

Seventeen months after defeating Aizen, the overall picture of Ichigo doesn't change, but he is getting bigger and getting sideburns. After he had regained his strength, apparently caused by the remaining energy from his Fullbring, Ichigo's shinigami clothing consists of a thicker band across his chest. He has four black vertical lines on his forearms and black, tattooed ribbons that cross across his chest, wrists, and ankles. Similar ribbons, but with white ends, are placed around his neck as collars.

After training at the Soul King Palace, Ichigo wears his normal black Shihakushobut with some notable changes: he has two white shoulder plates that cross his chest in an X shape and hold his Shikai blades in place, with the plate on his left shoulder three sections adorned with red scales and a white cloak with black markings around his waist.

Ichigo is a 15 year old trying to build a loner image, which is why his eyebrows keep knitting together. He has naturally orange hair, which seemed to bother many thugs at his school, so they kept attacking him. Claiming he doesn't care what others think, both about his hair and other things, Ichigo seems to enjoy fighting with the thugs. Ichigo is a very good student. He studies regularly and does not neglect his homework as he has nothing better to do at home. However, it is later told that Ichigo only works so hard to overturn the prejudices teachers tend to have about him based on his hair color and his actions with fellow classmates. It was also shown that even though Ichigo goes to school less and less due to his occupation as a Shinigami, he still passes his exams, although his teachers have to give him extra assignments due to his frequent absence.

Since he used to fight with others all the time, many students were afraid of him, even his current friend Keigo Asano. You can see that most of the girls in his class, Tatsuki's and Orihime's friends, fear him because of his constant struggles and his looks. Orihime herself was afraid of him, but after spending time with him, she realized that he wasn't that scary after all; she even describes him as a very kind person. In the first film, Rukia said he just looked scary. He seems to be liked by children, such as Karin's friends, who like to ask him for help. Nel often clings to Ichigo when she's scared and bursts into tears when something bad happens to him, such as when Ulquiorra nearly killed Ichigo during their first fight. He has never raised his voice against his sisters Yuzu and Karin, but he often argues with his father.

In terms of personality, Ichigo is usually stubborn, irritable, direct, sometimes on a confrontational course (for example with Rukia, Renji or Ganju), spontaneous, determined, cynical, impulsive and extremely protective of his friends. He also feels extremely uncomfortable around naked or shamelessly clad women, such as Yoruichi or Rangiku. It also often happens to him that he misreads names, so he reads the name of Yasutora Sado as "Chado" and that of Uryū Ishida as "Ametatsu Ishida". Another bad habit of his is that he often forgets the names and faces of his classmates, so he does not recognize Uryū Ishida at what he considers to be the "first meeting" and wonders where he knows his name from. His friends even claim that he only knows half of the class, which has now become a running gag. After losing a fight, he can also fall into a deep depression, for example after fighting the fourth and tenth Espada, Ulquiorra and Yammy. Sometimes Ichigo is also very analytical and understands things faster than others.

Ichigo struggles with respect and is often very rude when speaking to elders. He calls some commanders by their first names (Kenpachi Zaraki, Tōshirō Hitsugaya, Byakuya Kuchiki), despite protests from the last two, and almost never uses any forms of courtesy. He treats only a few people with respect and addresses them with -san: Yoruichi Shihōin, Kisuke Urahara, Jūshirō Ukitake, Sajin Komamura, Rangiku Matsumoto and Suì-Fēng.

It is later revealed that Ichigo is extremely awesome in combat. During the second fight with Grimmjow, he asks him what happened to his arm. He later induces Orihime in Hueco Mundo to heal his opponent Grimmjow, protects him from treacherous attacks by Nnoitra after the fight and refuses to attack a half-dead Ulquiorra. He avoids killing his opponents and mostly mourns when they die. Also, he has an aversion to his inner hollow and tries to avoid his power unless absolutely necessary. However, he accepts it because it is a part of himself.

Seventeen months after fighting Aizen, his constant fighting character has remained unchanged. However, he has lost the ability to see spirits and other spiritual beings.

On the show, Ichigo hasn't shown any romantic feelings towards any women. There is a strong bond between him and Rukia, and their love-hate relationship has some romantic potential. Orihime is in love with Ichigo, but Ichigo shows no signs of love as he has only shown protective feelings for her. Nel has also developed a strong affection for Ichigo and was initially jealous of Rukia in her child form. In her adult form, she almost crushed Ichigo in her hug. In the first movie, Ichigo developed a deep friendship with Senna. In the end, Senna sacrificed her life to save his.

Ichigo's past consisted of a normal life with his family, except for the fact that he could see ghosts. Since his name, as his father told him, protector means he wanted to protect his entire family, but especially his mother, who was the center of the family. So when he was four he went to a dojo to learn martial arts. On his first day there, he met Tatsuki Arisawa in a practice fight, with whom he later befriended. This defeated him with one blow in under ten seconds. Ichigo started to cry, but when he saw his mother standing in the door of the dojo, he wiped the tears from his face and a big grin took their place. Tatsuki admits to Inoue that she hated this quality of Ichigo. When he was about nine years old and on his way home from the dojo with his mother, he noticed a girl on the river bed of the Karasu, which has actually dried up at this time of the year. Since it was very rainy at the time, the river carried a lot of water. Because the girl looked very sad, Ichigo thought, she was about to jump into the river. In order to live up to his name and to protect as many people as possible, especially his family, he rushed to the girl's help. His mother Masaki followed Ichigo because it was dangerous to get so close to the river bed. The moment he reaches the ominous girl who has been lured by Grand Fisher, she disappears. Masaki reaches the scene at the same time as the hollow, so that the latter spontaneously decides to eat his mother's, instead of Ichigo's soul, and kill her in this way. Since then, he has spent his free time walking up and down the bank of the river (waiting for his mother) or crouching until his family tearfully told him how offensive his behavior was. He blamed himself and no one else for his mother's death and the resulting sadness of his entire family.

Later, when he got into junior high school, he was frequently beaten up for his orange hair color, which was very unusual in the normally black or brown hair of the Japanese. However, he never colored his hair or anything like that because he did not care about the opinions of others. Through all of these fights in his youth, Ichigo became physically strong, but he also gained an image as a brawler with his teachers, which drove him to in his free time, in which he usually only sat at home and had nothing to do learn to prove to his teachers the opposite of what they thought of him.
Just before Ichigo started high school, he met Yasutora Sado. He was just beaten up by a couple of criminals. However, Chad, who refused to fight because of an oath he swore to his late grandfather, was badly injured and tied to a chair. When the gangsters threatened to destroy Chad's coin, an heirloom from his grandfather, Ichigo showed up and drove the criminals away at great risk. After that first meeting, when Ichigo learned that Chad would only fight to help someone and not for himself, they made a pact that they would always fight for and protect one another. The following year they both went to Karakura High School.

Beginning of the story

At the beginning of the story, Ichigo sees and confronts a Shinigami named Rukia Kuchiki, who is looking for a soul in his room. During their conversation, a hollow attacks the house who has followed Ichigo's trail to his house. Because of Ichigo's meddling in Rukia's work while trying to protect his family, Rukia is injured and forced to hand over powers to him in a desperate attempt to protect the Kurosaki family. In the transmission, Ichigo takes almost all of her spiritual energy instead of half as Rukia intended. With Rukia's Shinigami powers and his own immense spiritual energy, Ichigo makes short work of the Hollow and Rukia.

The next day, Rukia appears in Ichigo's class, now apparently as a normal person, since his classmates can now see her too. Rukia tells Ichigo that she has her soul (Shinigami appearance) now - a so-called Gigai - rests, which allows her to restore her strength and to recover for the time in which she is in the world of people, thus to follow the pure logic, also other people can see her, who have no strange and noteworthy abilities to be able to see Hollow's or other Konpaku. Until she regains her skills, Rukia insists that Ichigo take over her duties as a shinigami, which consists of destroying hollows and bringing souls into soul society through what is known as Konsō. During this time, however, he is only able to take care of his Shinigami activities when Rukia uses her glove to separate Ichigo and his image as Shinigami; so he is dependent on Rukia. But this can be circumvented with the Mod-SoulKon by Ichigo swallowing the soul pill. In principle, the same effect is triggered as with Rukia with her glove.

Ichigo's new activities trigger hectic rush in both the human and the world of souls. At one point even the Hollow Grand Fisher, who has been sought by the Shinigami for 50 years but never caught, comes into the human world to devour the souls of Ichigo's sisters Yuzu and Karin. At this point Ichigo learns that it was Grand Fisher who killed his mother and seeks revenge. Rukia tries to stop Ichigo from fighting, fearing that Grand Fisher is too strong for him. However, Ichigo tells her to go with Kon and bring his sisters home. Then she remembers Kaien Shiba's last fight, which he fought out of honor, and reluctantly follows his instructions. Ichigo wounds Grand Fisher very badly, but Grand Fisher escapes.

During a duel with Uryū Ishida, a huge number of Hollows, including a Menos Grande, are lured into the human world and defeated in every form, mostly by Ichigo and Uryū. Chads and Orihimes sleeping forces in them are also awakened during the fighting and they each defeat a hollow on their own. Ichigo's victory against the Menos draws the attention of the Soul Society to him, and so heralds the beginning of the next story arc. Meanwhile, Ichigo and Uryū develop an uncomfortable friendship between a Shinigami and a Quincy, as both appear to have saved each other's lives.

Soul Society Arc

After attracting the attention of the Soul Society, Ichigo loses his Shinigami powers again when Byakuya Kuchiki destroys the Saketsu, the refuge of spiritual energy, and the Hakusui, its amplifier, after his fight against Renji Abarai. The damage Ichigo sustains leaves him as a powerless human soul, and as he lies on the ground struggling with death, he learns that Rukia has been convicted of two crimes:
First, that she transferred her shinigami powers to a human.
Second, that she was in an undetectable gigai beyond the time she was allowed in the human world.
With the desperate desire to save Rukia, because he sees the guilt for these crimes with himself, he undergoes tough training under Kisuke Urahara, which almost costs him his soul and also brings him to the edge of the transformation to a hollow. After training, he released his own Shinigami powers and thus got his own zanpakutō and, furthermore, since he had ten days for training and was ready after five, a lot of combat experience, perseverance and courage through the five days of fighting Acquired Kisuke Urahara. After training, he learns that both Chad and Orihime, with Yoruichi, and Uryū, who is alone, have trained and want to go to Soul Society with him to save Rukia, even though Rukia told Ichigo that he did should not dare to follow her, he ignores this warning and sets off with Chad, Orihime, Uryu and Yoruichi.

After arriving at Seireitei, Ichigo fights against many Shinigami, including many of the higher ranks, for example Ikkaku Madarame. Often he only gets away with serious injuries and only manages to survive with great difficulty, but with his incredible endurance he always gets through until he can be healed. A hollow mask, a leftover from his training with Kisuke Urahara, also appears repeatedly on his body to block blows that would normally be fatal. He can easily win his first fight against gatekeeper Jidanbō, but is easily fended off at the gate by Gin Ichimaru. After he was able to penetrate Seireitei through the flower crane cannon of Kūkaku Shiba together with Ganju Shiba and the others, he is received by Ikkaku Madarame, the 3rd officer of the 11th Company, and starts a fight with him. Ichigo can defeat him even after he has freed his Zanpakutō, and then learns from Ikkaku that he will be hunted by his commander Kenpachi Zaraki, who will choose the strongest among the invaders.

Then Ichigo meets Renji one more time, who seeks revenge for the earlier defeat. Renji injures Ichigo, but during the fight Ichigo remembers an attack that he had often carried out and learned to control in the fight with Kisuke Urahara. This one attack, currently nameless, later the ghost of Zangetsu tells him that the attack Getsuga Tensho means defeated Renji. After that, Renji changes his mind about who to be loyal to and who not, and begs Ichigo to save the life of his childhood friend, Rukia. Renji is arrested for trying to fight alone and lose, while Ichigo is healed by Hanatarō Yamada in the Seireitei's drainage system. On his way to the Tower of Penance, he finally meets Kenpachi Zaraki and at first can hardly wound the commander, who according to Hanatarō is immortal. In the end Ichigo uses the full strength of his Zanpakutō and can defeat Kenpachi, but is incapacitated himself. Kenpachi is carried away by Vice Commander Yachiru Kusajishi, while Ichigo is brought to safety by Yoruichi. Since then Ichigo has thought that Kenpachi is seeking revenge and is terrified of him, ran away when Kenpachi asked for another fight and feels his desire to kill even from afar. In reality, Ichigo is just the fighter who poses the greatest challenge Kenpachi has ever faced. In the Japanese original, Yachiru also said: "Ichi is Ken-chan's best friend!".

Before his Bankai training and after his fight against Kenpachi, Ichigo goes to the Tower of Penance to save Ganju and Hanatarō from Byakuya Kuchiki. When he arrives, he faces Byakuya, although he has not even regained his full strength. This time the fight is going better for Ichigo than when they first met, but this time Yoruichi interrupts the fight, indicating that she and Byakuya share some experiences from the past. Then she takes Ichigo to Bankai training.

Yoruichi tells Ichigo that he cannot save Rukia with his current strength and advises him to train to reach the bankai of his Zanpakutō. After training, he and Yoruichi, along with like-minded Jūshirō Ukitake and Shunsui Kyōraku, attack the Sōkyoku to prevent the execution. At the last second Ichigo stops the execution and defeats the three attacking vice commanders, Chōjirō Sasakibe, Marechiyo Ōmaeda and Isane Kotetsu, with his bare hands. By doing this and by stopping the Sōkyoku, a blade with the power of 1,000,000 zanpakutōs, he has proven that he has become much stronger in the three days of training. Then he is challenged to fight by Byakuya.

During the fight, Ichigo reveals his Bankai and cleverly dodges Byakuya attacks. Byakuya counters by using the second form of his zanpakutō, Senkei: Senbonzakura Kageyoshi. After a while, Ichigo is exhausted and in critical condition. At this point Ichigo's Inner Hollow gains the upper hand and hurts Byakuya as well Getsuga Tenshō so far in Bankai that a longer fight seems impossible for both of them. After Ichigo has regained control of his body, the decision is made in a final clash of swords, Byakuya with the final form of his Zanpakutō, Shukei: Hakuteiken and Ichigo with all of his remaining spiritual energy, since he says "so a cool technology does not have to offer ". After this last attack, neither of them have the strength to continue fighting, but Byakuya confesses to his defeat because Ichigo destroyed his sword. Then Ichigo finds out that the events in the Soul Society were a sophisticated plan by Sōsuke Aizen and opposes this together with Renji. They cannot defeat Aizen, not even inflict damage, and so Aizen removes the hōgyoku from Rukia's body. Without the help of the other commanders, the two are helpless, but when they arrive, Aizen makes his way to Hueco Mundo.

Before the group returns to the human world, Ukitake gives Ichigo a badge that allows him to officially destroy Hollows in his neighborhood and enables his soul to leave his body at any time. Similar to Rukia's cell phone, it also alerts of Hollows in the immediate vicinity. He also talks to Rukia, who chose to stay in Soul Society even after they tried to kill her. Ichigo leaves the Soul Society with an understanding of Rukia and his Shinigami powers.

Arrancar Arc

After he returns from Soul Society with his friends, but without Rukia, his life briefly resumes its usual, peaceful course. With the arrival of the new student Shinji Hirako, this cheerfulness is broken. Because that Shinji reveals himself to Ichigo as a recruiter for the Visored and wants to convince Ichigo to join them. Ichigo persistently refuses, even after Shinji told him that his inner hollow would one day take control and destroy everything for a long time. Shortly thereafter, Ulquiorra and Yammy, two Espada from Aizen's army, are sent to Karakura Town to locate Ichigo and assess his strength. Yammy continues to be there Gonzui with which he sucks the spiritual energy of many living beings in his vicinity. When Ichigo sees Chad, who has come to help, injured, he activates his Bankai and can do the Décima Espada cut off the right arm. However, his inner hollow now interferes, paralyzing him and giving Yammy the chance to wound Ichigo and Orihime. The arrival of Yoruichi Shihōin and Kisuke Urahara forces Ulquiorra and Yammy to retreat.

Thinking that Ichigo cannot protect his friends, Ichigo loses his will as a Shinigami and falls into depression. This mood continues until the Gotei 13 expedition team arrives. Rukia, one of the six Shinigami led by Tōshirō Hitsugaya, forces Ichigo to fight a hollow and scolds him the whole time. As a result, Ichigo's will to protect his friends is reappeared and reinforced. Later that day, Ichigo discusses the Arrancar threat with the rest of the Shinigami and learns what they really are. Then Rukia is officially invited to Ichigo's home and is allowed to sleep in a bed in the room of his sisters.

That night, six arrancar enter Karakura Town planning to do what they think Ulquiorra could not do. They split up to find goals with spiritual energy. Chad's house is attacked first by Di Roy, who Rukia quickly takes down, and then by the much more powerful Grimmjow, who takes Rukia off with one blow. Ichigo then uses his Bankai, but Grimmjow can parry his attacks with his bare hands. Desperate, Ichigo uses Getsuga Tenshō to harm Grimmjow, the attack that nearly allows his inner hollow to take control, and Ichigo notes that the hollow would take complete control if he used the attack two or three more times . Ichigo even harms Grimmjow and leaves him with a large scar across his chest when Kaname Tōsen comes and brings Grimmjow back to Hueco Mundo, leaving an Ichigo disappointed in his apparent defeat who worries about Rukia's injury.

In this fight Ichigo realized the importance of gaining control of one's inner hollow and sought out Shinji and the Visored to accept their offer. In a practice fight with Hiyori Sarugaki
