General information about Israel
The Middle East conflict between Israel and Palestine has been fermenting since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. This was based on a United Nations plan to divide the British Mandate Palestine into a new state for Arab Palestinians and a new state for Jews as a place of refuge provided for the Holocaust.

The long way to peace
On the very night of the founding, the Arab neighbors declared war on Israel, as a result of which victorious Israel occupied a third of the area reserved for the Palestinians. Several other wars followed before a peace process was first launched in 1977. In it, Israel returned the conquered Sinai peninsula to Egypt, but annexed the Syrian Golan Heights and the eastern half of Jerusalem, which formally belonged to Palestine. During the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations in Oslo in 1993, the Palestinian territories in the West Bank and Gaza Strip were granted extensive autonomy, but a final two-state solution has yet to be found.

Israel as a modern democracy in the Middle East
The state of Israel is the only state in the world in which the majority of the population belongs to Judaism. A total of around 6.1 million Jews and 1.7 million Arabs live in the country of just 22,380 square kilometers on the eastern Mediterranean. Israel is considered the country with the highest standard of living in the Middle East and the only parliamentary democracy based on the Western model in the region. The largest metropolitan area is the modern economic metropolis Tel Aviv on the Mediterranean.
