Eye Control Troubleshooting Guide

This guide is a collection of instructions, tips, and tricks for using Windows Eye Control. Some quick notes:

  • If you need help setting it up, go to “Getting started with eye control in Windows 10”.

  • We tested ™ with the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C, but it should work similarly with the other supported devices.

  • Some of the following tasks may require the help of a friend, family member, or carer.

First steps

What is Windows Eye Control Function?

Windows Eye Control lets you use eye tracking technology to control the mouse pointer, type on an on-screen keyboard, and communicate with others using text-to-speech.

Do I need a specific version of Windows to use eye control?

Eye control is available in Windows 10 from Fall Creators Update (version 1709). This works on all Windows 10 PCs, including tablets. Eye control is not supported on Windows 10 S ™. Learn more about using Windows 10 S with assistive technology here.
To check the Windows version of your PC:

  1. Switch to begin > Settings > system > info.

  2. Check the Version number. It should be 1709 or higher.

To update the Windows version:

  1. Switch to begin > Settings > Update and security.

  2. Select on the side Windows Update the option Looking for updates out. Windows will download and install available updates.

  3. Restart the computer.

  4. Repeat the above steps until there are no more updates available for your PC.

Note that your organization may have postponed the release of the required update. Contact your organization's IT department for help.

Can I use eye control in my own language?

Eye control is available in all markets worldwide. However, the eye control keyboard only supports the US English keyboard layout. In addition, some of the text in the eye control settings is only available in English.

Do I need a separate device to use Windows Eye Control?

If you are using ™ Computer or Monitor Standard ™, you will need an eye tracking device installed on your computer or monitor. Some laptops and monitors have built-in eye tracking solutions. If you're not sure if you have one, check the instruction manual for your laptop or monitor.

Which eye tracking devices are supported?

Do I need to download software to use the eye tracking device?

Yes, most eye tracking devices require you to download and install the latest device software on your computer in order to use the device. You can use the device app to calibrate your device and change the device settings. Details can be found in the instructions that came with the device.

Why can I use ™ windows eye control to use my PC with my eyes? Why do I need a device for this?

The Windows eye control is like a new input method for your computer. To use this new method, you need a device that can follow and interpret your eye movements.

Will eye control work if I wear glasses or if my PC is next to a window?

Depending on your eye tracking device, eye control may not work well in places with lots of sunlight. In addition, eye tracking works differently depending on eye color, eye size or eye shape. Other factors can also affect eye tracking accuracy.

Does Microsoft collect eye tracking data?

Microsoft ™ does not monitor, store, or share any information about eye monitoring.

Deploy the device

Can I reposition the magnet as soon as ™ has stuck?

The adhesive on the magnet holder is strong. Trying to remove the magnet after it is attached could damage the magnet, computer, or monitor. Before placing the magnet on your computer or monitor, read the instructions that came with your device. Before sticking the magnet, plan the location of the device and be careful when placing the magnet.

How can I prevent my device from jumping off the magnet?

Plan ahead for the location of the device in relation to the USB port to prevent the device from loosening when the cable is moved or bent. You may need to use the USB extension cable. The extension cord may be sold separately.

Can I integrate the device on my laptop or do I need a separate monitor?

You can attach the device to your laptop. Calibrate the eye tracker, ideally not moving the computer, and try to keep your position as stable as possible. If you need to move the computer or change your position drastically, recalibrate the eye tracker.

Connect the device

Error messages are displayed in the menu of the "Tobii Eye Tracking" app, ™ no connection. How can I solve this problem?

I unplugged the eye tracking device's USB cable and when I plugged it back in, Windows displayed an error stating that the hardware is not recognized. How should I proceed?

Open the Tobii Eye Tracking app and check that your œeyesâ € are displayed at the bottom of the main menu. If this is the case, you can ignore the message. If not, try all USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports first. When you get the ™, uninstall and reinstall the app. For instructions on how to uninstall the eye tracking app, see How do I uninstall the eye tracker app? The installation instructions can be found in the installation manual.

Which USB driver version should I use?

The driver should be from 2014 or newer. Â

How can I check and update the USB driver version?

  1. Open the Windows start menu.

  2. Type "device manager" and press ENTER. When a confirmation dialog appears, select Yes out.

  3. Expand USB controller.

  4. Find your driver controller and check the date and version of the driver.

  5. To update the driver, right-click and select Update driver out. Follow the instructions and prompts on the screen.

  6. Restart the computer.

Switch on the device

My device appears ™ even though I have installed everything ™ and restarted my computer. What should I do?

When the eye tracking device is switched on, the red LEDs on the device should light up. First, make sure the device is turned on. Â

  1. Choose begin > Tobii Eye Tracking out.

  2. In the app, check the box in the top left corner. When the ™ on OFF setis to turn the button on A around.

If the lights still do not ™, try disconnecting and then closing the device. Simply disconnect the USB cable from the computer and wait a few seconds. Then reconnect the USB cable.

Interact with the computer through the eyes

When I turn on eye control, the launchpad appears and the eye tracking device is on, but the screen doesn't respond to my eye movements. How can I solve this problem?

Launch the Tobii Eye Tracking app and check the area at the bottom of the app's main menu. "Eyes" should be displayed there. If you see an exclamation point with the message “Click to set up your display”, the system needs to set up the display. Select the message and follow the instructions.
This problem can occur if the eye tracker has been moved and is no longer aligned with the screen as it was before.

Eye Control is on, but nothing highlights when I pause on it, and the cursor doesn't follow my eyes. What should I do?

The Windows eye control function works differently than the eye control function in the Tobii Eye Tracking app.

  • As you use ™ App, app items are highlighted based on appearance and you can make selections by pressing the SPACEBAR.

  • If you are using Windows ™ windows in general and the Windows Eye control is enabled, nothing on the screen will respond to your eye movements until you choose what you want to do from the launchpad.

What do the buttons on the launchpad mean?

How can I switch between apps or tasks? When I select the Task View button on the Launchpad, the available Task Panes appear, but the Task Pane that I am looking at does not highlight. Â

To select a To Do List in To Do List, select Click $ on the Start Pad, and then look at the To Do item that you want. Â
Alternatively, you can switch between tasks and apps with the app toggle. Just press ALT + TAB, release the TAB key, focus your gaze on the task you want to switch to, and release the ALT key when the task is highlighted. Â

The system is too fast and thinks my eyes are on something and picks it up even if I'm still looking around to find the right place to live. How should I proceed?

You can simply increase the time it takes for the system to realize that you want to select something, not just search. Select Eye Control Settings on the Launchpad and set General Dwell Time Slow or Slowest a.

How do I resume eye control after selecting the Eye Control Pause button on the Launchpad?

Selecting this button hides the launchpad and displays a pause sign instead. To continue eye control, you must dwell on the pause sign.

Why does ™ the pause sign not respond when I pause on it?

If you move your position after selecting the Eye Control Pause button on the Launchpad, the system may no longer track your eyes and pausing on the pause sign will no longer have any effect. To resolve this issue, you will need to recalibrate the eye tracking device. Refer to the installation manual for further instructions.

To verify that the system is tracking your eye position, activate the aiming cursor. Select Eye Control Settings on the Launchpad and switch with the eye cursor to A. The aiming cursor is displayed as a small red dot on the screen. It shows you which point the system recognizes as being targeted by you. If you try to reset eye control to the pause mark, you will know that your position has changed, if the red dot does not appear at all, or if it does not move.

How do I move the launchpad?

If you need to select something near the bottom or top of the screen but the Launchpad seems to be in your way, you can use the Reposition Launchpad button to move the Launchpad to the opposite side of the screen. This can help reduce the distance you need to move your gaze towards yourself after falling asleep on the "just click" or "just click" button.

How do I close the Tobii Eye Tracking app menu?

You can easily navigate to another window or app on the screen. To do this, you can use the Active Applications option on the Launchpad or the app quick access. For instructions, see How do I switch between apps or tasks?

I moved my laptop with the eye tracking device to another room and the eye control no longer works. How can I solve this problem?

You need to recalibrate the eye control device. Recalibration is required if you change your position drastically or if the computer setup changes, e.g. B. when using a laptop.

Control the mouse

When I click or click on the launchpad and then try to move the pointer to the correct position to click, it's difficult to move the cursor to the exact location I need before the click occurs.

Instead of selecting “Left click” or “Right click” on the Launchpad, select “Precise mouse”. It allows you to optimize the cursor position before you click.

What is the Precise Mouse feature and how do I use it?

For precise mouse control, select the Precise Mouse button on the launchpad. Position the eyes on the screen where you want the cursor to be. You can then optimize the position and choose the action you want (left click, double left click, right click or close).

You can also control the mouse more directly by clicking and clicking the buttons on the Start Pad and then positioning on the screen where you want the mouse action to occur.
If you want to cancel any mouse interaction after making a selection, search the screen to return to the Start Pad.

Entering text

How can I activate the writing of shapes?

Hold down the Eye Control Settings button on the Launchpad. In the settings window, set the button Swype on A firmly.

The writing of shapes works ™ when typing in the Text-to-Speech (TEXT-to-Speech) window. How should I proceed?

For shape writing to work, first make sure that you have enabled ™ feature. Then check on the keyboard of the text-to-speech window that Swype is selected as the input method. In the lower line the â € œForm writingâ € is gray when ™ is selected. If the button is black, dwell on the button to select it.

How do I enter double letters using the shape writing feature?

If the word you enter ™ has duplicate letters, look at the corresponding letter on the keyboard only once. Don't look twice or dwell on it. Â

  • When you type "pillow ", dwell on" p ", look at" i "," l ", and" o ", and dwell on" w ".

  • When you type â € œskillâ €, dwell on â € œsâ €, look at â € œkâ € and â € œiâ €, and dwell on "l".

I'm trying ™ to enter my password, but I'm making a lot of typing errors because it's hidden. What can I do?

First try to use Swype and increase the length of stay. For instructions, see How do I activate Swype? and the system is too fast. If you are ™ in a safe place and there is an option to display your password near the password text field, select it so you can see what you are typing ™.

Update the eye tracking app software

How do I update the Tobii Eye Tracking app software?

In the Tobii Eye Tracking app, select Interactions > About > Check for updates out. Follow the instructions and prompts on the screen to install the update. Restart the computer.

I tried checking for the Tobii Eye Tracking app software updates, but I received the following message: â € œWeâ € ™ re sorryâ € ... There was a problem getting the updateâ €? How should I proceed?

This means that there are currently no new updates available and your software is up to date. You can use eye control as usual.

Uninstall the eye tracking app

How do I uninstall the eye tracking app?

  1. Open the Windows start menu.

  2. Enter the name of the app e.g. B. "œTobii".

  3. Right-click the app icon in the start menu.

  4. Select in the context menu Uninstall then follow the instructions and prompts on the screen.

  5. Restart the computer.

You lose ™ settings / profiles. If you also want to remove the settings and profiles, please refer to the device manufacturer's support website for instructions on how to perform a clean installation.

If you reinstall the app, you will have to recalibrate your device as well. Refer to the installation manual for further instructions.

Deactivating eye control or the eye tracking device

I accidentally activated eye control. Is there an easy way to turn it off again?

There is currently no shortcut key to enable or disable eye control. To deactivate it, select begin > Settings > Ease of use > Eye control and select the toggle to make the button on Out to put. Â

I disabled eye control, but the LEDs on the device are still on. How do I turn off the Tobii Eye Tracking Device?

If you deactivate the Windows eye control, the device is usually switched off as well. To turn off the device separately, open the Tobii Eye Tracking app and use the toggle function to toggle the button in or at the top left corner of the app's main menu from A in OUT to change.
