And it's not even the battery's own fault: Overstrained alternators, loads of electrical consumers on board and a start-stop system - even so-called AGM and EFB batteries reach their limits, and they are specially designed for constructed these tough challenges. Learning the battery: information for the energy management system
Initialization: With the help of a scan tool, the correct battery registration takes place in the workshop.
So that it doesn't get that far in the first place, the car manufacturers have come up with an energy management system. A control unit monitors the charge status of the battery, counts start processes, regulates the power output and notes the corresponding parameters. This should extend the life expectancy of a vehicle battery. In this way, the car knows exactly about the battery status and controls the charging voltage and current accordingly.
For this reason, more and more car manufacturers are demanding that the battery be taught in - i.e. off to the workshop so that the energy management system, thanks to the diagnostic device, knows that a new battery is on board and can forget the stored data. Everything to zero: multi-brand tools can now carry out this so-called initialization on numerous cars. But what if this does not happen or the process does not follow the manufacturer's specifications? Some manufacturers only teach their own batteries to the vehicle. Reason: It is necessary to enter a code that is only available on original batteries. Basically, the battery code on the original batteries is only used for traceability. Always choose the same battery type when replacing
We tried the swap without learning, replaced the EFB battery of an Audi A3 Sportback 1.4 TFSI with another battery with comparable characteristics. Important: To avoid damage, choose the same battery type when replacing, i.e. do not replace an AGM battery with a conventional lead-acid battery and pay attention to similar performance data.
At first we are shocked: the on-board computer beeps to warn us of malfunctions in the brake assist system, automatic distance control, automatic start-stop and stability control.

We roll off cautiously, but it's not that wild: the A3's energy management only lost these functions for a few seconds due to the brief loss of voltage. After one or two braking operations, the error messages disappear, after a short test lap the technology works, even the clock automatically adjusts itself correctly again after a very short time. It takes longer for energy management to familiarize itself with the vehicle battery and for optimal charging. Conclusion:Teaching in is required for many manufacturers and cars with start-stop. Advantage: All functions in the car are available immediately. Caution, the battery type must remain the same!
