How to overclock a radeon 7870 driver

Overclock Radeon graphics card automatically with Catalyst

Use AMD's own overclocking function

In order to be able to use "AMD Overdrive" under "Performance", check the box next to "Enable Graphics Overdrive". Overclocking can lead to display errors, data loss and crashes, neither AMD nor PC-WELT are liable for any problems. In order to measure the increase in performance, you have to perform a benchmark before and after overclocking the graphics card - we recommend the freeware Furmark, which makes the graphics card sweat by calculating a complex fur ring. The free tool GPU-Z monitors the temperature and fan in the "Sensors" tab of the graphics card during the process.

Overclocking - in small steps to success

AMD threw the automatic overclocking "Auto-Tune" out of the control - now you have to approach the optimal values yourself and test for stability yourself with the tools mentioned above. Adjusting the values is very easy and intuitive - move the respective slider as desired and click on "Apply" at the bottom right. The control immediately implements the settings. Use the "Standard values" button to reset the factory settings.

The menu items are naturally and informatively labeled so that even laypeople can quickly find their way around. To avoid problems, you should only adjust the values in small steps - afterwards always check the new settings in practice with Furmark and GPU-Z and compare them with the preliminary tests. In the event of complications, stop immediately and manually turn the slider down until the test runs smoothly. Conversely, if the benchmark is successful, you may be able to tease out a little more performance from the graphics card with the sliders. On the other hand, the graphics cards can also be underclocked: If you only surf the web or just run simple applications, you can run the card at lower clock rates in order to save a few watts.

The adjustment is even easier via the point "Power control settings". There you specify the power loss limit (TDP) up to which the graphics card should work. Turn the setting up, increase the wattage and the card will overclock itself to that limit. The other way around, the TDP can also be reduced in order to work more energy-efficiently.

Overclocking an AMD Radeon graphics card in the PC-WELT editorial team

Of course, we did our own thing and used an AMD Radeon HD 7870 to overclock and underclock. As you can see in the following table, the difference can be clearly seen in practice. But don't expect miracles!

EnlargeDifferent clock rates and the associated consumption in comparison. The refresh rate comes from the measurement of the stress benchmark MSI Kombustor.

If all overclocking doesn't help and your favorite game is degenerating into a slide show, you should consider buying a new graphics card. The Nvidia Geforce GTX 680 is currently the fastest single-core graphics card on the market - and at 500 euros, it is not affordable for everyone. You get the best value for money with an AMD Radeon HD 7870, which costs 349 euros and which also displays current games in a handsome manner and without stuttering.
