From insider tip to everybody’s darling: the avocado has done really well in recent years! But how do you peel and cut them? What does avocado actually go with - and what happens to the avocado core? Here you will find our favorite avocado recipes and tips on how you can really get the most out of the power fruit!

What does avocado actually taste like?

If you've sneaked around the green fruits a few times and asked yourself each time how an avocado tastes like: here you go, here's an attempt at an explanation! Here's what you can expect from a well-ripened avocado:

- nutty-sweet taste
- mild aroma
- Buttery consistency due to the high fat content

The avocado doesn't offer fireworks for the taste buds - but that's exactly why it is the perfect partner for so many other flavors! Do not you think? Then you haven't made the acquaintance of our mango and avocado salad yet!

By the way: there are more than 400 types of avocado worldwide. In this country, however, you will usually only find two in the supermarket, namely Fuerte and Hass. In both cases, the peel is inedible, and the Hass avocado tastes a bit more intense than the larger Fuerte.

The high fat content is pretty much the first piece of information on avocados. You should have found out just as quickly that it is healthy fat. So it's clear: Avocados can certainly not harm your health (provided you don't overdo it in terms of quantity, of course).

Nutritional values: calories and fat content of avocados

The pulp of an average-sized Hass avocado weighs around 160 grams, another variety can be significantly heavier. Such an avocado contains the following nutritional values:

- 208 calories
- 20 g of fat
- 6 g of carbohydrates
- 2 g of protein
- Vitamins A, B1, B6, D, E, K

Yes, 20 grams of fat is not a small amount - but it contains a high proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids. They make it easier for the body to absorb fat-soluble nutrients from other foods and, among other things, help lower the cholesterol level in the blood. Can you accept, right?

The tree on which the avocado blooms originally grows mainly in Mexico and Guatemala and is one of the laurel family. Strictly speaking, the avocado is a fruit, namely a berry fruit. So even if you don't taste much of the fructose: an avocado is a fruit. But now enough theory and let's get down to the bacon, or rather: the healthy fat!

Well, that may be wrongly worded: How you eat the power fruit, we certainly don't have to explain it to you. The more interesting question is how best to cut and peel the avocado - and whether the avocado kernel is edible or not.

Peel and cut the avocado: It's that easy

To cut and peel the avocado, all you need is a sharp knife and a mat:

- Cut once around the core on the long side.
- Turn the two halves against each other so that the avocado rises.
- Quarter the avocado. Now you can easily unscrew the core.
- Peel the peel off the quarters.

Raw or cooked? How to eat avocado

Whether in a cream or as a side salad - you can find the raw avocado in most dishes. There is a good reason for this: in theory, you can just as easily eat an avocado cooked or baked in the oven. However, in the heat it clearly loses its aroma or becomes a lot more bitter.

Can you also eat the avocado seeds?

There are people who swear by it that the grated avocado seed is at least as healthy as the pulp. What's wrong with the rumor?

Not much, if scientists are to be believed: The core contains the bitter substance persin and other natural substances that are supposed to keep pests away.

So far, there are no meaningful figures that prove how harmful this could actually be for humans. However, it is a relatively clear sign that no food made from avocado kernels may be sold in Germany. But that doesn't mean you have to throw away the kernels: Below you will find instructions on how to germinate the avocado kernels at home!

Salad, cream and more: our favorite avocado recipes

Avocado in the salad is the absolute classic. A combination that always works is, for example, avocado, chicken and balsamic vinegar:

Do you prefer it a little more lively? No problem, we just say: avocado + citrus note = unbeatable!

On some days you just need a little more than “just” a salad. How about an avocado sandwich just in case?

When is an avocado ripe?

For an avocado dish to become a culinary highlight, it is of course not entirely unimportant that the avocado is ripe enough. Recognizing that is not that difficult - if you know what to look out for!

How to recognize a ripe avocado

The quickest way to determine the degree of ripeness of an avocado is and remains the pressure test: A ripe avocado gives way if you press the skin a little. The softer the consistency under the peel, the more ripe the avocado and the faster you should eat or freeze it (more on that in a moment).

If you buy the Hass variety, you can also orient yourself by the color: if the avocado is dark brown to black, it is ripe. A green Hass avocado, on the other hand, has to ripen for a few more days. How it works? With very little effort: simply wrap the avocado in newspaper and give it a day or two!

Is the avocado bad if it's brown inside?

Sliced ​​the avocado and discovered the first brown spots - great, is it no longer edible? Don't worry, you can still eat the avocado even though it is brown! However, the brown the flesh of an overripe avocado, the more bitter it can taste.

Apart from that, the green inside turns brown quickly when it comes into contact with air (you probably already know that from apples or bananas). In this case, nothing changes in taste. If you want the avocado to stay nice and green, it's best to drizzle a little lemon juice over it.

Storing avocado correctly: this is how it works

Sometimes you have the feeling that avocados follow their own rules - there doesn't seem to be any leeway between unripe and overripe, does it? Of course there is, the avocado just has to be stored properly!

What's the best way to store a whole or half an avocado?

The ideal storage location depends on whether you want to keep the avocado whole or in half and when you want to eat it: You can store a whole avocado either at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

The cold causes the fruit to ripen much more slowly. So if you don't plan to eat the avocado for a few days, the refrigerator is the best place to go. You wrap half an avocado in foil or put it in a sealable box and put it in the fridge. Caution: leave the core in the half that you keep!

Of course, fresh fruit and vegetables always taste best. But what if you happen to have more avocado at home than you want to eat in the near future?

Can you freeze avocados?

In a nutshell: Yes, you can freeze avocado. Since, as I said, it tastes best fresh, it may not necessarily be the product of choice, but it is definitely better than throwing the avocado away! You have the following options:

Halve the avocado and pour a little lemon juice over it. Wrap the halves in foil and put them in the freezer bag in the refrigerator compartment. If you want to thaw them again, you should allow about an hour.

Puree the ripe avocado and pour the cream into an ice cube mold. The cubes can be ideally portioned later.

You can store your avocado (s) in this way for about eight months. But we dare to say that it won't be that long before you feel like eating avocado again!

DIY avocado growing: is it even possible?

Last but not least, the big question about sustainability: Can you actually grow your own little avocado tree from the core of an avocado? And if yes, how does it work?

Does an avocado grow at home too?

The bad news first: Unfortunately, you can't harvest your own avocados at home. Firstly, in our climate, the self-planted avocado tree never grows big enough to be able to bear fruit. And secondly, a tree from a different avocado variety would be required: the male and female flowers open in opposite directions, so a single plant cannot produce avocados.

The good news: You can grow a nice houseplant from an avocado seed at any time! You just need a little patience for this, because the first shoots can sometimes take weeks or even months to come.

Plant the avocado seeds and let them germinate: that's how it works

So that the core can become a pretty little plant, you should ensure the following conditions:
- at least 20 ° C room temperature
- a little water every three days
- Incidence of light, but without direct sunlight

There are two ways to grow the core: The quickest way to see success is to hang it over a glass of water and transfer it to a flower pot as soon as the core has germinated.

If you have a particularly green thumb and fear that the core could start to mold with the glass method, it is best to put it in the flower pot instead.
