Lewis Carroll out Alice's Adventures in Wonderland :
"Cheshire Puss," she started rather scared, not knowing at all if it would like the name, but it just grinned a little wider.
"Come on, it's satisfied so far," thought Alice and she walked on. "Would you please tell me which way to go from here?"
"It depends a lot on where you want to go," said the cat.
"I don't care where ..." said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the cat.
"As long as I live somewhere," Alice added by way of explanation.
"Oh, you will surely do that," said the cat, "if you only walk long enough."

The goal is yours - you have the goal
Whether the goal is a promotion at work, a streamlined work process, a new client, published article, exercise program, or weight loss, the goal must be your goal. You are unlikely to achieve your manager's goal, your spouse's goal, or the goal at which you in should work this year.
Your goals need to create excitement as you think about their performance. You have to believe that there is something in there in order for you to achieve it.
Sometimes, especially at work, when you are worth the end of the reward, you will take on challenges to aid the organization's goals. These goals may not come as close to you as your personal goals, but you work to achieve them for the good of the organization and your success there.
Firmly base your goals on your values
Hyrum Smith, the founder of Franklin Quest, later Franklin-Covey, Inc., developed a goal setting model. Smith's "Success Triangle" sets determining values at the base of the goal setting process.
Smith recommends that each goal be specifically tied to a defining value. For example, if diversity in the workforce is a value that your organization supports, then at least one goal must improve diversity. Every goal should be linked to a defining value.
Short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals are then set based on the solid foundation of your values. If the goal you set is congruent and allows you to live your core values, you are more likely to achieve the goal.
According to Gene Donohue, of TopAchievement.com, setting goals in all aspects of your life to keep your life balanced. Balance also helps you achieve goals as every aspect of your life is represented in your goals. You are less likely to experience warring parties when every aspect of your life has a value-based goal. He suggests those aspects of your life in which to set your goals

"Until one feels obliged, there is hesitation, the chance to withdraw, always ineffectiveness. In all initiatives and creations there is an elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and great plans: that one is fixed in the moment Providence: All sorts of things are done to help someone who otherwise would never have come.
A whole stream of events results from the decision that would bring to his advantage all sorts of unforeseen incidents, encounters and material aid that no one could have dreamed of. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets: "Whatever you can do or you can dream, start with it! Boldness has genius, magic and strength in it." (Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe)

Believe that you can achieve the goal
Each of us has a little voice in our head. It is the voice of your subconscious to judge the self. You deal with yourself every day; They comment on every situation you encounter. You discuss events and plans in your head.
Your comment is both positive and negative. Positive thoughts and planning will help you achieve your goals. Negative thoughts and comments undermine your self-esteem and confidence, and affect your ability to achieve your goals.
Listen to your voice You can change its tone by believing in yourself and your ability to achieve your goals and resolutions. Use this unconscious critic to positively support your goal success.
When you are a manager, one of your more important roles is to help your employees develop positive self-esteem. Your positive attitude and belief in your success in achieving great goals will fuel your increased self-esteem and self-confidence. This, in turn, increases their ability to do more and add more to your business.
Paint a living result
Traditionally, goals were set for measurable results. This works well when the results are measurable. However, don't be tied to only setting measurable goals; Perhaps you are focusing on the trivial because it is measurable, not your key findings. Sometimes the most important goals, the non-urgent, critical goals, are difficult to measure.
"Researching Alternatives for Business on the World Wide Web" is difficult to measure, while the steps after making a decision are easy to measure. "Learning about new performance management options and considerations" is difficult to measure. The next step, "designing a new assessment system," is easier to define and measure.
As you move up the ranks of leadership, you may find that it becomes more difficult to measure your goals. The most important measurable aspect of your work will likely be the results that your reporting staff will produce.
With goals that are difficult to measure, start with an image in your head that you write on paper that describes the outcome you are looking for. Make the picture as vivid as possible. I have a published book in my head while still pondering possible topics.
Write down your goals
Your goal is to achieve your goal. Writing a goal is a powerful statement versus half-phrased thoughts in the back of your mind. It is the conscious promise to you to look for the fulfillment of the goal. Working out potential action plans and due dates makes the goal even more powerful.
Share your goals with people who are important to you
When you are sure that your important peers are helping you achieve your goals, share them. Your manager will likely support your goal attainment as your success is your success.
You should honestly evaluate the ability of your family members, co-workers, and friends to provide support. Many different feelings, experiences, and historical events play a role in close relationships. If you don't believe that you have whole-hearted support, keep the goals to yourself.
Regularly review goal setting and performance progress
One of the weaknesses of any annual appraisal system is the lack of frequency with which progress and success are measured and tracked. The best way to achieve your goals is to review them daily as part of your normal planning process. (You have a normal planning process, right?)
Whether you use a paper planner, smartphone, or computer, you can enter your goals and schedule daily and weekly actions to aid your performance. The daily review discipline is a powerful goal attainment tool.
Take action to identify and remove barriers to goal setting success
It is not enough to pursue your goals on a daily basis. If you are not satisfied with your progress, you need to assess what is holding you back from achieving the goals. Ask yourself questions like, "Is this goal really important?" (If not, why did you commit to achieving it? Maybe it's not important or less important than other goals.)
"Are there certain obstacles that you experience that affect your ability to achieve the goal?" (In this case, make action plans to remove the obstacles or seek help from a colleague, friend, or family member).
If you're not making progress on a particular goal, try a root cause analysis to see why. Only by honestly analyzing your lack of progress can you determine steps to change that picture. With computers and cell phones, you can imagine destinations that will be automatically forwarded for 365 days. Talk about a daily reminder of failure!

Revisited Seven Habits
"Beginning with the end in your head" is the gift of imagination and conscience. If you are the programmer, write the program. Decide what you will do with the time, talent, and tools you have to work with: "In my little sphere of influence, I will decide."
- Stephen R. Covey
Reward yourself and accomplish the goal achievement
Fulfilling a small goal is also a reason to celebrate. Don't weigh yourself down with thoughts of all that you have left to do. Celebrate what you did. Then go to the next milestone.
Goals and New Year's resolutions change
Regularly review the goals that you have set. Are the goals still the right goals? Give yourself permission to change your goals and decisions based on changed circumstances.
Don't spend a whole year failing to achieve a certain goal. Your time is better for achievement than when you beat yourself up for lack of progress. Maybe you made the goal too big; maybe you set too many goals. Make an honest assessment; Change what needs to change periodically and move on.
Following these ten guidelines can make all the difference in your life. Is this year going to be a year of triumph for you, a year of great success? Whatever your goals and solutions, these tips can help you increase your success.
