Quarterback legend Tom Brady, the most successful playmaker in NFL history, meets his potential successor, quarterback shooting star Patrick Mahomes. To ensure that you are perfectly prepared for the super duel, has summarized the most important facts about the two Super Bowl finalists. The beginning is ...

Quarterback legend and NFL veteran Tom Brady

As the most successful player in the history of his sport, Brady embodies the present and the past of American football. After 20 years in the football business and a not particularly successful 2019 season with the Patriots, the 43-year-old is currently experiencing a rebirth that is second to none.

With his new team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the former Patriots star is in an NFL final for the tenth time after a 31:26 at the Green Bay Packers. The special thing about it: For the very first time in the history of the league, a franchise has a home advantage in the Super Bowl. Another triumph with the Bucs could make Brady immortal.

The beginnings

Tom Brady was born on August 3, 1977 in San Mateo, California, and his real name is Thomas Edward Patrick Brady, Junior. In his home country he attended the San Francisco 49ers games with his father at an early age. The then quarterback Joe Montana is considered his role model.

He later studied at the University of Michigan, where he played for the Michigan Wolverines, initially only as a backup quarterback. Because the superstar, celebrated today, was not considered a special talent at the beginning of his career. But even then Brady was absolutely crazy about sports, highly disciplined and proved that he can bite through.

In his third year of college he finally fought his way to the position of starting quarterback, and in his senior year at university he even became captain of the football team. With 442 complete passes in 712 attempts in just two seasons, he ranks third in the University of Michigan's all-time quarterback rankings.

2000 NFL Draft

In the 2000 draft, the Michigan college quarterback was drawn 199th by the New England Patriots. Despite the late draft pick, the native Californian made his debut as a starting quarterback on September 23, 2001 because Drew Bledsoe was injured. In the same year Brady led the Patriots to the first Super Bowl victory in the history of the franchise (then at 20:17 over the St. Louis Rams).

Two years later he repeated this masterpiece against the Carolina Panthers (32:29). Both times he was named MVP of the final. In 2005 he got his third ring. More will follow in 2015, 2017 and 2019. Brady has made nine finals with the New England Patriots and has a record of 6-3.

Since the franchise from New England with Head Coach Bill Belichick was able to win all games in the AFC in 2007, Brady and Co. moved into the NFL final as big favorites. Nevertheless, they lost the Super Bowl in 2008 with 14:17 against the New York Giants.

Super Bowl MVP was then quarterback Eli Manning, who recently revealed in an interview that the defeat at that time annoys the ex-Patriots quarterback to this day. Back then, Brady's Patriots had the chance to go down in NFL history as the best team of all time, but they were denied it.

After 10 years without a title, Brady's Patriots faced the Seattle Seahawks in the 2015 Super Bowl. The AFC champion beat the NFC champion 28:24 and Brady was reelected Super Bowl MVP.

In 2017 the exceptional player finally managed to get promoted to "G.O.A.T." (Editor's note: Greatest of All Time). In Superbowl 51, the Belichick squad made an incredible comeback and beat the Atlanta Falcons 34:28 in the first overtime in Super Bowl history. Brady is now the most successful quarterback in NFL history with five Super Bowl rings.

Career highlights

Brady's list of career highlights after more than 20 years in the NFL is long.

Six Super Bowl Campions (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI, LIII) and four Super Bowl MVP (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XLIX, LI) are just two of the many records the NFL oldie currently holds. In addition, there are 14 wins in the Pro Bowl and most recently the NFC title with the Bucs for the first time.

The six-time Super Bowl champion has been married to Brazilian top model Gisele B√ľndchen since February 2009. The couple have two children together: son Benjamin (born 2009) and daughter Vivian (born 2012).

The football player also has a son (born 2007) with his ex-girlfriend, actress Bridget Moynahan.

A new era

Brady announced his decision to actually leave the Patriots on social media in March 2020 after 19 seasons and six Super Bowl victories. "Forever a patriot," the father of three wrote to his fans via Instagram.

But the exceptional player did not want to retire for a long time. The quarterback moved to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Florida, where he signed a two-year contract worth $ 50 million with an additional $ 9 million in incentive bonuses.

On top of that, "TB12" succeeded shortly afterwards in bringing his old companion Rob Gronkowski to the Bucs as well, one of the most spectacular comeback in NFL history was perfect. During their time together in New England, he previously won three Super Bowls with the tight end.

Almost a calendar year later, the two are now on their way to their next joint title after triumphing over the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game (31:26).

It is currently uncertain whether Tom Brady will extend his contract, which will expire next year. He actually wanted to quit when he was 45, at least that's the plan.

In a few days, however, the all-star will first have a very special game - against an opponent whose young quarterback Patrick Mahomes is also considered a possible successor to the NFL legend.
